No significant move of private pupils to state education say English councils

Predictions that a significant number of parents would move their children away from private education into the state sector have not materialised, according to a news story in The Guardian, citing figures from councils in England.

The article states that most councils say there’s been no impact from the VAT on fees policy on applications to start at state secondary schools later this year.

It adds that forecasts of widespread shortages of school places are not happening, based on application figures for places in Year 7, with figures showing show more families are receiving their first choice of school this year.

A government source said: “Despite all the doom-mongering and ululating from the private schools lobby, as well as their Conservative and Reform lackeys, there hasn’t been a massive exodus from private schools.

“This government will deliver for working families who want a brilliant state education for their children.”
