A state-of-the-art sports building in Bristol designed by Alec French Architects is in the running for a national environmental property award.

The Chellaram Sports Complex at Clifton College has been shortlisted for the Decarbonisation/Green Project of the Year at the Education Property Awards 2025.

Designed by Alec French Architects and constructed by Speller Metcalfe, the new sports building delivers Sport England Premier-level play facilities and features a sprung multi-purpose floor which can accommodate an extensive range of sports.

The Chellaram Sports Complex, which has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ sustainable building rating, replaces the school’s previous ‘bubble’ sports dome, which required significant energy to maintain a constant pressurised state.

The new building incorporates air source heat pumps that absorb heat from the environment and thermal battery technology to store energy for later reuse. It also uses passive ventilation to regulate airflow and temperature within the sports hall.

In addition, the sports complex features a wildflower biodiverse roof and the site includes native woodland planting and a wildflower meadow with the aim to deliver an 80% biodiversity net gain.

As well as being an exciting new amenity for Clifton College, the Chellaram Sports Complex is also used by community groups and local schools.

The Education Property Awards recognises innovative projects, organisations, and individuals in the education property sector.

The winners will be announced at a black-tie event on 20 May at the Leeds Marriott Hotel.
