Lord Wandsworth College welcomes Ukrainian pupils

Five children who have lost parents in the war between Russia and Ukraine, have been given a scholarship to an English Study Camp at Lord Wandsworth College in Long Sutton, Hampshire.

All five have received fully-funded places in a partnership between Lord Wandsworth College and camp organisers, the Wimbledon School of English.

The group is also being assisted by the charities Brightseeds and The Children of Heroes Charity Fund. Their two-week stay aims to offer respite and an opportunity to improve their English.

Natali Lurie, fund development and strategy director for The Children of Heroes, said: “We are working hard to give our children a new childhood. Every child has the right to education, development and the opportunity to feel good, even if they are living at the epicentre of war. During these challenging times for Ukraine, when our children face daily struggles, the support of Lord Wandsworth College and English Study Camps by Wimbledon School of English is a true demonstration of human solidarity.”

Wimbledon School of English has been running camps at Lord Wandsworth College since 2016, offering children from up to 30 nations an opportunity to study, take part in activities and visit UK cities while improving their English.

Paul Greaves, director of young learners for English Study Camps by the Wimbledon School of English, said: “The group is taking part in our main academic courses of Explore English and Future Business Leaders,” reveals “In the afternoon, they’re enrolled on our Plus Courses, which include film making, drama and coding. They’ll also have visited Oxford, London, Winchester and Brighton before they leave.”
