Outcomes First Group embraces solar power
Outcomes First Group (OFG) has installed solar panels at four of its schools over the summer.
The four schools – Lamledge and Smallbrook in Shropshire, Acorn Park in Norfolk and Bankside in Worcestershire – are projected to meet up to 28% of their energy demand from solar.
The four systems, provided by Two Blues Solar, will provide a combined generation capacity of 298 kilowatt-peak and are expected to generate 273,000 kilowatt-hours annually. They will reduce carbon emissions by 61 tonnes each year. Over 25 years, the systems are projected to save nearly £2 million.
At two of the sites, battery storage will allow power generated outside peak times to be saved and used later, providing a more reliable energy supply during teaching hours and ensuring greater long-term savings.
Two Blues Solar and OFG established a relationship last summer, shortly after Outcomes First established a dedicated sustainability team. Solar and batteries form part of the group’s wider plan to reduce the environmental impact of its estate, which spans just under 100 schools across the UK, alongside plans for an electric fleet and charging infrastructure.
Early this year, Two Blues Solar carried out feasibility assessments across OFG’s portfolio. While the company typically funds and develops on-site solar projects directly, OFG chose to self-fund the pilot and asked Two Blues Solar to act as consultant and project manager.
Rachel Stark, commercial director of Two Blues Solar, said: “Schools face the challenge of delivering major works within short holiday windows. We took this project from feasibility to delivery in a matter of months, appointing Photon Energy as the installer and completing all four sites before the new academic year – on time, within budget and with minimal demand on OFG’s staff.”
Astrid D’Amelio, head of sustainability at Outcomes First Group, commented: “Delivering high-quality education is our first priority, but we also want to run our schools responsibly and sustainably. This project reduces our Scope 2 emissions by generating clean electricity on site and cutting our demand from the grid. It also provides long-term cost stability and, importantly, gives pupils a tangible way to engage with renewable energy. We’re working with Two Blues Solar to identify further opportunities across our estate.”
Two Blues Solar will continue to provide long-term asset management support to OFG.
