Girls killed after Land Rover crashes into school
Two eight year-old girls have been killed and seven people, including five children, hurt after a Land Rover crashed into The Study Prep primary school in Wimbledon, southwest London just after 10am on Thursday 9 July.
Selena Lau died shortly after the incident and Nuria Sajjad passed away on the following Sunday.
The school is an independent preparatory school for girls aged four to 11.
The female driver is reported to have crashed into an outdoor tea party the children were enjoying to celebrate the end of term. The driver, who is in her forties, stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Around 20 emergency vehicles were reported to have entered and left the school.
The education secretary Gillian Keegan tweeted: “I am deeply concerned by reports of an incident at a primary school in Wimbledon this morning. My thoughts are with families, staff and the community involved and I am hugely grateful for the fast action of the emergency services who are currently at the scene.”
Home secretary Suella Braverman tweeted that she is “saddened” by the “tragic incident” and thanked the emergency services.
Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper tweeted: “Thinking of all the families, pupils and staff affected by the terrible incident at a primary school in Wimbledon this morning.”
